How We Install Pet Turf — The Differences That Matter
Pet turf installation isn't the same as standard residential installation. The drainage requirements are higher, the infill selection changes, and the edge securing needs to account for dogs that test perimeter edges. Here's how we handle each piece.
1
Pet-Specific Consultation
We ask about your dogs specifically — size, breed, how many, activity level, whether you've had problems with digging. A household with two large labs has different installation requirements than one small dog. The answers shape the product recommendation, drainage system, and whether we recommend zeolite infill for your specific situation.
2
Enhanced Drainage Base for Pet Load
Pet turf installations get deeper aggregate base than standard residential installs. Concentrated urine requires faster drainage than rain — the liquid comes from smaller surface areas more frequently. We design the base specifically for the expected pet drainage load and slope the installation toward exit points.
3
Product Selection for Pet Use
We carry pet-specific product lines with open-face backing designed for pet drainage, antimicrobial fiber treatment, and blade density appropriate for active dogs. We'll show you samples and explain the differences between the options relevant to your situation.
4
Odor-Control Infill Application
For most pet yards, we recommend zeolite infill in pet-concentrated zones — fence lines, typical bathroom areas, high-traffic corners — with standard silica sand in the broader lawn area. We can do full zeolite infill for yards with heavy or multiple dog use. The infill gets applied and worked in by section.
5
Reinforced Edge and Perimeter Securing
Dogs probe edges. We install additional securing along all perimeter edges and seams, and at any transition points where the turf meets fencing, concrete, or garden beds. The goal is a system that doesn't give the dog any purchase to lift or pull.
6
Homeowner Orientation for Pet Care
We leave you with a clear routine: how often to rinse, what to do about solid waste, when to call us for professional cleaning versus handling it yourself. We also discuss what normal temperature behavior looks like in summer and when the surface is and isn't a concern for your pets.
